Jake lent his elbows against the desk and began flicking through the applications for new chambermaids. He let out a sigh and rubbed his eyes as he went over the tiny print. He had no idea why he had to read applications for cleaners. They come; they clean. What was the big deal? He had been out all night chasing skirts. It was about three by the time he got home. Even then he didn't go right too sleep. He had gotten lucky and she was young, and kept him up all night. What was her name again? Emma, Ellie, Ella, Erin? Either one, she was great fun. He smiled before looking down at the amount of forms he hadn't gone through.
With another sigh, he shuffled the papers and picked out four. "Simple," he beamed, putting aside the rejects and slipping the accpeted ones into a tray. "Done," he sighed, kicking his feet up on the desk and placing his hands behind his head, kicking back. He let out a sound of satisfaction as he closed his hazel eyes and loostened his tie. The day had only just begun. It was about eight thirty. Maybe he could sleep for an hour? No. People would want to talk to him. Tough job being manager. He ran a hand through her hair and took a deep breath. He was sooo tired. Maybe he could just rest his eyes? Yeah, that was a good idea. Just as he was drifting off, there was a light knock at the door. Jake groaned and took his feet off the desk before shouting, "Come in!"

A few minutes before, a taxi had turned into the taxi rank in front of the Hotel Britz, braking for a halt in one of the empty spaces as an attendant rushed forward. Inside the vehicle, Miss. Kassidy Shandon was gathering up her purse and briefcase as she paid the driver when her passenger door open; she smiled to the attendant as he welcomed her and then exited the vehicle before the attendant slammed the door behind her. She walked up to the swiveling doors, nodding at the doorman, as the taxi swerved out of the space and then revved up as it exited the taxi rank and joined up with London traffic once more.
Round and then through the swiveling doors, Kassidy glanced around the lobby and smiled at its pristine, tasteful, yet comfortable decorum as, off to one side of the check-in counter, she spotted a small desk tucked into a corner. It was already set up with a lamp, a computer, a rack of pamphlets, some office supplies and a gold CONCIERGE plaque; she grinned and sighed, feeling like she was already ready for work, but first she would have to report to the manager, a Mr. White. Inquiring at the check-in counter, she was given directions to his office and, after a quick ride up in the elevator and a walk down the corridor, she was soon standing in front of the door.
Kassidy paused for a moment, trying to collect her thoughts, and then lightly rapped on the door; after a moment, she faintly heard a man shouting, "Come in!"
She twisted the knob and pushed open the door, stepping into the office as she briefly caught sight of the weary fellow seated at his desk with a pile of papers stacked in his tray before she smiled and said, "Hello, Mr. White? I'm Miss. Kassidy Shandon, your new concierge."

Hello, Mr. White? I'm Miss. Kassidy Shandon, your new concierge
Jake soon bolted upright and out of his chair when he realised it was a new employee; a female one at that. He smiled at her warmly and quickly did up his top button and tie. Most people knew how concerned he was about his image. He hated other people seeing him scruffy. Before leaving that morning, he had made sure his eyes were not read and puffy and he had styled his hair just right with wax. He had put on a neatly iorned blue shirt with a dark blue tie, and his typical black trousers and shoes.
"Hello there Miss," he paused as he flicked through the papers so he could be reminded of her name, even if she had just said, "Shandon." He motioned to the cushioned seat opposite him with a huge grin. "Take a seat, and welcome to Hotel Britz," he beamed, holding his arms out to motioned to the room around him. He fiddled with the papers infront of him until he came across all of Kassidy Shandon's papers, then he looked back up at her. She was dressed rather smartly for her first day; a good first impression, Jake thought. He had been wondering about introducing a uniform, or just a blazer of some sorts, but seeing how good this woman looked in her own choice of clothes, he began changing his mind.

Mr. White, who she could see was wearing a neatly ironed blue shirt with a loose dark blue tie, bolted out of his chair at her appearance, but smiled warmly as he did up his top button and adjusted his tie; his hair was also slicked back. Kassidy Shandon had not expected the manager of such a fine hotel as this one to have waxy hair, not when it gave the impression of a certain...slyness.
"Hello there, Miss..." The manager flicked through several papers as she stepped forward and closed the door behind her, feeling a little uneasy as he then continued, "Shandon. Take a seat, and welcome to Hotel Britz!"
Mr. White motioned to the cushioned seat opposite him with a huge grin and Kassidy strolled over, setting down her briefcase before she sat down with her purse in her lap; she adjusted the coat of her pantsuit as he fiddled with the papers laid out on the desk in front of him. She waited a moment, glancing over towards his computer monitor and then his clock as her legs crossed in front of her; finally, he looked back up at her.
Kassidy smiled and told him, "Thank you, Mr. White, I am very pleased to be here. I hope that I may serve the guests of Hotel Britz to the best of my ability and gain the experience necessary to earn membership in the Society of the Golden Keys."

Jake smiled and, as he turned, caught a glimpse of his reflection in the huge mirror on the wall. After making sure his hair was spiked up in all the right places, he took to his own chair opposite his new employee. "I know this might sound a little un-professional, but please, call me Jake. Most people who work here do. I'm not one of those, 'I'm better than you so call me sir' types," he offered, resting his folded arms on his desk. Most of his workers liked calling him Jake, mostly because he was younger than a lot of them.
"So..." he began, opening a drawer to find a name tag for her, "Are you aware of the codes we use with some of our, let's say, regular members?"

Mr. White, however, didn't seem to be paying much attention as he gazed at his reflection in the huge mirror on the wall and rolled his head around with a discerning glint to his eye; at last, he sat down once more across from her. Kassidy cleared her throat and shifted in her seat as he folded his arms and rested them on the desk, looking quite relaxed even when she was starting to get a little more edgy.
"I know this might sound a little un-professional, but please, call me Jake." Mr. White offered. "Most people who work here do. I'm not one of those, 'I'm better than you so call me sir' types."
"All right...Jake," Kassidy nodded and smiled. "I suppose I'm a little uncertain about what to expect. It's just that the Hotel Britz seems so elegant and I thought that its staff would be...well, a little more strict about such propriety."
"So..." Jake began, opening a drawer. "Are you aware of the codes we use with some of our, let's say, regular members?"
"Oh, do you mean as an employee?" Kassidy queried, sitting up a little straight. "I have been trained in standard procedure for hotels, Jake, I know the codes of this business, how all staff must maintain a certain level of efficiency in their work and with each other to accommodate guests. The hotel has to be clean and up to date, the staff has to be friendly, and everything has to move quickly yet smoothly so that this establishment can be recognized as outstanding, 4-star, and first-class for the best business."

All right...Jake
Jake smiled thankfully as she called him by his first name. He felt more at ease now they were on first name terms. A lot of his employees seemed more like friends then workers. "Thank you," he grinned, before righting something down on a postet and beginning to chew on the end of the pen.
I suppose I'm a little uncertain about what to expect. It's just that the Hotel Britz seems so elegant and I thought that its staff would be...well, a little more strict about such propriety
Jake laughed lightly. "Trust me, when you begin working here, you will see Hotel Britz is not so elegant," he chuckled. Hotel Britz might have looked posh to the un-trained eye, but the regular staff knew how rock and roll this place could be. Staff may have been polite and smiles to the guests, but to eachother, they were all a huge group of friends and far from elegant. He laughed to himself as he remembered the christmas party. But it wasn't just the staff who could be wild, the guests played a huge part in it all too. Rock stars trashed the suites, politicions bought in the papprazzi, and when football teams come in before a match, the amount of protitutes and drugs coming in and out were insane.
Jake nodded and pulled a face of confusion as she went on about the various things she had been trained in. He shook his head and laughed as she had finished. He did not wish to sound rude but what he had asked had earned him a totally different answer. "You have obviously been trained according to the book," he explained, linking his fingers together and resting his elbows on the table. "How can I explain this?" Jake rested back in his chair and tried to think of an easy way to explain it. "Our hotel provides many services for our guests. Most of our regular guests are aware of this. You should be aware of these also. For example, if a man came over to you, and he had no lady friend staying in the hotel with him, and he asked for an extra pillow, you would organise a lady friend for him. If you get what I mean..."

Jake smiled as he wrote on a post-it and said, "Thank you."
Kassidy couldn't help smiling as well while Jake chewed on the end of the pen before he lightly laughed. "Trust me, when you begin working here, you will see Hotel Britz is not so elegant."
"What do you mean?" Kassidy inquired, but as the manager asked what she knew about 'regular members' and she answered as best as she could, when she didn't quite understand the question the way he had phased it, he nodded along even though he appeared a little confused.
At last, he shook his head and laughed again as he linked his fingers together and rested his elbows on the table. "You have obviously been trained according to the book...how can I explain this?"
Jake rested back in his chair and Kassidy tried not to seem impatient as he finally continued, "Our hotel provides many services for our guests. Most of our regular guests are aware of this. You should be aware of these also. For example, if a man came over to you, and he had no lady friend staying in the hotel with him, and he asked for an extra pillow, you would organise a lady friend for him. If you get what I mean..."
Kassidy sat there for a moment, staring at the manager as her head tilted slightly and she bit her lip; at last, she managed to say, "I understand, Mr. White. I'm just wondering...is that quite legitimate? What sort of clientele are we serving that they can expect such...service?"

What do you mean?
Jake laughed and ruffled his hair a little bit. "We get some rowdy guests sometimes," he smiled, "Footballers, rock stars, etc, so sometimes or suites aren't kept as tidy as we want them. Sometime we get some rude guests, and when they are extremely offensive to some of our staff, we cook them up one of our 'special breakfasts'." He chuckled lightly, remembering the last lot who had recieved one of these breakfasts. They were a load of sexist buisnessmen who had been very rude to the check-in girl Janet. Jake hated it when people upset his staff. He loved his staff and liked making sure they were okay.
I understand, Mr. White. I'm just wondering...is that quite legitimate? What sort of clientele are we serving that they can expect such...service?
Jake smiled wryly and sighed. So she was one of those types. He knew he should have left the hiring to his old consierge. Him and Jake had mantained a sort of close friendship. "No, you're right, Kassidy," he admitted, "But, we pride ourselves in the fact we give people what they want. There are many, erm, non-legitimate services in our hotel. Would you like another member of staff to explain these to you? Or do you understand?" he asked, hoping she still wanted her job.

Jake laughed and ruffled his hair a little bit as he smiled. "We get some rowdy guests sometimes. Footballers, rock stars, etc, so sometimes or suites aren't kept as tidy as we want them. Sometime we get some rude guests, and when they are extremely offensive to some of our staff, we cook them up one of our 'special breakfasts'."
He chuckled lightly as Kassidy blinked and opened her mouth, but decided against saying anything as it was perhaps better that she didn't know about...these 'special breakfasts' and whatever they might have contained. A couple of weeks ago, when she had mentioned that she was thinking about becoming a concierge now that she had graduated, her sister Amy had recommended that she should apply at the Hotel Britz and she was soon accepted...that was a bit of trick.
Amy must have known that she never paid much attention to the celebrity gossip, never read anything that would have explicitly mentioned the sort of scandals that took place at the Hotel Britz...Kassidy didn't know what she getting into here, though now she was able to guess. Still, with the shock gone, she wasn't willing to walk out now, not so soon after getting the job, especially when Amy would tease her about such an act. It was her reputation at risk now, but she would not quit, she would face whatever trouble she might encounter here and maybe change a few things too...all for the gold plaque and the Golden Keys.
Jake smiled wryly and sighed as he admitted, "No, you're right, Kassidy. But, we pride ourselves in the fact we give people what they want. There are many, erm, non-legitimate services in our hotel. Would you like another member of staff to explain these to you? Or do you understand?"
Kassidy cleared her throat and slowly nodded as she replied, "I understand, Jake, though maybe I will need some help now and then to get used to how things are run around here. Still, I think I'll be able to manage well enough and I'm willing to accommodate the guests of the Hotel Britz and their...desires to a certain degree, if it is in the best interest of the hotel."

Jake chuckled lightly as Kassidy looked at him in shock and he instantly regretted hiring her. Hotel Britz wanted a consierge who was sly and cheeky, and had many good contacts to get the certain things guests wanted. He took a deep breath and rubbed his tired eyes, knowing he should have gotten his old consierge to do the hiring. Even more, he wished Max had never decided to retire.
I understand, Jake, though maybe I will need some help now and then to get used to how things are run around here.
Dean pulled a face as he lent back in his chair. "Maybe I could get one of our current staff to let you know?" he asked, his voice rising up. Janet on reception had been there for a while, she could fill Kassidy in it all. "I assure you most of our staff are friendly, and will explain our, let's say, un-written code."
if it is in the best interest of the hotel
Jake smiled toothily and rested his arms on the desk in-front of him. "Thank-you Kassidy," he beamed, thankful she understood.
